PURPOSE:   Receives, prepares, documents, and distributes laboratory samples.
 
SCHEDULE: Saturday and Sunday, 03:00PM -- 11:30PM.
 
FUNCTION:   Performs daily quality control and maintenance functions.  Enters data into a laboratory computer system and generates accurate testing records.   
 
ALLOCATION OF TIME:  The incumbent can spend up to 85% of their time receiving, organizing, accessioning, centrifuging, decapping, racking, distributing, and discarding samples sent to the Testing Lab for processing.  10% of the time may be spent identifying and preparing samples for confirmatory testing by outside facilities.  The remainder of the time may be spent performing QC checks, handling biohazardous trash, and performing other general housekeeping duties.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Receives, organizes, prepares and distributes samples for testing within the Testing Laboratory. 
  2. Uses centrifuges to prepare samples for testing.
  3. Receives, organizes, accessions and prepares samples for shipment to offsite testing facilities.
  4. Follows the SOPs/procedures for specimen handling and processing.
  5. Accurately performs all pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic activities defined by departmental procedures for which the associate has successfully completed training and for which competency assessment is current.
  6. Adheres to quality control (QC) policies and procedures, documents all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  7. Maintains the knowledge of all SOP’s, CFR and theoretical background necessary to perform quality control pertaining to PK analyzer microplates, centrifuges, incubators, NAT pre-analytic equipment, and general housekeeping to include disposal of biohazardous waste. 
  8. Performs data entry accurately and completely.  Maintains neat, legible records and generates documentation compliant with a cGMP environment. 
  9. Meets productivity standards. 
  10. Follows all established departmental and corporate policies.
  11. Participates and/or assist in continuing education, projects and training of other staff.
  12. Identifies problems that may adversely affect the performance or reporting of test results and either corrects the problem or immediately notifies supervisory personnel.  Follows procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance to include documentation of all corrective actions taken.
  13. Complies with all IBC safety policies and procedures.
  14. Follows universal precautions and protective measures required by IBC and outside regulatory agencies.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Not Applicable.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent required.  Associates degree preferred.  Lab Assistant experience in a hospital or blood center setting preferred but not required.  See New York State Qualifications (attached). Must be computer literate and able to utilize the necessary software and hardware to perform the functions of the job and access company communications.
NOTE:   Refer to training programs for applicable SOPs and training checklists, including but not limited to those SOPs/policies/processes/procedures in the Testing Laboratory, Quality Assurance, and Safety series.
 
SUCCESS FACTORS: The Testing Laboratory Assistant must be able to: 1) complete work assignments in a timely and accurate manner; 2) maintain sensitive confidential donor and associate information; 3) express themselves clearly and effectively in oral and written form; 4) to communicate effectively with co-workers, management, vendors and/or customers as necessary; 5) work efficiently under pressure and time constraints in a fast paced environment; 6) demonstrate organizational skills; 7) communicate with people of diverse cultures or educational backgrounds; 8) display professional behavior when interacting with staff, vendors, visitors, etc.  The Testing Laboratory Assistant must be willing to work hours other than those primarily designated to support the department.
 
The Testing Laboratory Assistant must be able to choose and use the necessary laboratory or instrument software and hardware to accomplish functions of the position.  Experience with Windows based applications is preferred.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:  Clean, climate-controlled laboratory environment.  Exposure to blood samples routine and personal protective equipment required to prevent contact.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  1) Visual acuity and manual dexterity; 2) Ability to sit or stand for 8-12 hour time periods; 3) Ability to lift up to 40 pounds alone, over 40 with assistance and transport for short distances, and 4) Ability to hear high-pitched tones.
