POSITION SUMMARY
  • Safely transports staff members and equipment to and from scheduled work locations. Provides an exceptional experience and follows all standards to perform accurate medical screening, determine donor eligibility, perform phlebotomy, and assures donor and recipient safety. Responsible for the daily operation and the effective utilization of all resources including equipment and supplies. Works as efficiently as possible to reach collection goals established while also following all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and departmental policies.
DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES 
  • Pleasantly greets all donors and treats donors and co-workers with respect and courtesy.
  • Executes screening process, performs medical exam, and draws safe units of blood in accordance with SOP.
  • May be trained on automation and specials (NEOs, Autos, Directed Donations).
  • Will examine each blood donation record related to mobile/center collections to verify completeness and accuracy.
  • Observes donor for impending reaction; render care when necessary.
  • Reports donor reactions or any other unusual incidents to the Team Leader.
  • Must be knowledgeable and informative to donor on current incentive programs and special event drives.
  • Observes all work rules and procedures established by Human Resources and Donor Services, which provide for the safety and efficiency of operations.
  • Accomplishes all tasks efficiently and economically as directed by management.
  • Correctly perform, document, evaluate, and review all Quality Control (QC) of collection equipment according to procedure (SOP) or QSD.
  • Attends departmental meetings and training sessions as required and participates in the trial and evaluation of new methods and equipment.
  • Assists in ordering of supplies and assures that inventory levels are at appropriate levels.
  • Stock supplies in designated locations as needed.
  • Prepares supplies for operations as needed (i.e. preparing automation kits, preparing blood bags).
  • Packs equipment supplies for blood drive, assist load and unload mobile vehicles.
  • Responsible for set-up and dismantling of blood collection equipment in accordance with established plan.
  • Assist Team Leader and management with staff, center, and mobile schedules as required to meet the operational needs. Achieve mobile/donor center collection goals by managing to daily goal (which includes day of automation conversions, split rates, equipment run rates, inventory needs).
  • Participate in obtaining organizational goals through replenishment strategies (i.e. re-booking, apheresis education, email information collection).
  • Complete all necessary competencies by their due date.
  • Must maintain annual Continuing Education requirements appropriate for position.
  • Mentor new staff in assigned tasks.
  • Can be stationed at the refreshment area to document assist and treat donor reactions.
  • Appointed to escort donors (especially at High Schools) to refreshment area and assist with reaction by ensuring donor safety by guiding donor to the floor, completes Adverse Reaction report, and provides treatment to donor, reports incident to Team Leader.
  • May be required to drive a company vehicle.
  • Float to other sites or mobiles as assigned.
  • Answer the telephone, direct calls appropriately, and initiate calls to assist with donor scheduling.
  • Maintain clean and orderly donor area.
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Training in phlebotomy, EMT, MLT, LPN, RN student, or MA preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License required; CDL preferred
  • Current satisfactory Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) required.
 
Experience
  • Prior experience in blood banking, phlebotomy, or a health care field preferred.
  • Prior healthcare experience a plus.
     
Skills and Knowledge
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills required.
  • Ability to use tact and care in all situations according to people’s individual differences.
  • Ability to interact with others to build relationships.
  • Ability to acknowledge verbal and non-verbal cues and respond appropriately.
  • Demonstrated commitment to taking personal responsibility.
  • Ability to produce reports, documentation, and communications using employer provided resources.
  • Must possess a strong understanding of policy, protocol, and regulations.
  • Possesses the medical knowledge necessary to determine donor suitability, render immediate and proper care to donor and patient, and attend to safety and quality control issues as required by SOP and external regulatory requirements.
  • Basic keyboarding skills preferred.
  • CPR certification or willingness to be trained and certified.
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to a vehicle.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Physical demands: frequent prolonged standing and occasional prolonged walking, eye/hand coordination with significant manual dexterity, visual, and hearing acuity to perform essential responsibilities independently. Able to maintain irregular schedule when necessary. Should be able to lift up to 40 pounds following established lifting and carrying safety procedures. Mental demands: requires ability to maintain routine of intense concentration for periods of short duration and good cognitive, analytical, and memory ability. Environmental hazards: Potential exposure to biohazardous material effectively minimized and controlled by following SOPs and adhering to established biosafety protocols (i.e., proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), compliance with Universal Precautions, etc.).
